The manager-to-be has highlighted Kevin Strootman, Toni Kroos, Mats Hummels, Edinson Cavani, William Carvalho and Luke Shaw - who is already the subject of a £27 million bid - as his preferred targets.
With Nemanja Vidic and Rio Ferdinand already confirming they will leave the club in the near future and Patrice Evra a target for Juventus, defensive options are a must.
However, United have long been lacking an attacking spark in midfield so - despite the club-record January addition of Juan Mata - would the likes of Kroos and Strootman serve the team better?
Wayne Rooney recently signed a bumper new contract at Old Trafford and Robin van Persie is familiar with Van Gaal from his Netherlands committments so is another striker needed? Especially considering the likes of Danny Welbeck and Javier Hernandez are currently warming the bench?
