The Argentinian defender has pledged his future to the Magpies - ending 18 months of speculation linking the Argentine centre-back with a move away from St James' Park

Newcastle United captain Fabricio Coloccini has ended 18 months of speculation linking him with a move away from St James' Park by committing his future to the club.

Coloccini, 32, had looked destined to leave the Magpies after requesting a return back to his native Argentina last year, but has since overcome his personal reasons, and has assured fans of his presence next season.

The news comes as added benefit for manager Alan Pardew, who ended a run of six straight defeats with a comprehensive 3-0 win against Cardiff City on Saturday.

"I had personal problems," Coloccini told the Shields Gazette. "Sometimes it's tough. You have to decide between the problem and the work.

"Sometimes it's too difficult. Now it's finished, and next season I will be here. I'm looking forward to improving.

"We want the best for Newcastle united.

"This season we finished top 10, and maybe we will bring some players [in the summer].

"We will try to do well and finish in the top eight, or something like that. We will always try to improve."
