Shay Given appointed to 'assist' Aston Villa manager Lambert

The 37-year-old goalkeeper and Gordon Cowans have both been promoted after the club suspended assistant manager Ian Culverhouse and head of football operations Gary Karsa
Aston Villa have appointed Shay Given and Gordon Cowans as 'temporary assistants' to manager Paul Lambert after the club suspended Ian Culverhouse and Gary Karsa.

Villa have yet to disclose why assistant manager Culverhouse and Karsa, who is head of football operations, have been suspended, pending an internal investigation, but the club announced in a statement that Given and Cowans "have been temporarily promoted to assist manager Paul Lambert and his first team coaching staff".

16/1 Villa are 16/1 to be relegated this season
Given, who has not made an appearance for Villa since January 2013, was sent out on loan to Middlesbrough on November 28 but returned to Villa Park at the end of February.

"As players, it's important that each and every one of us take responsibility right now and I'm delighted to play my part in helping the manager and the team go and try to win on Saturday," said Given.

Villa are currently on a run of four straight defeats in the Premier League, which has left the club four points above the relegation zone with five games remaining.

"I'm delighted to have Gordon and Shay to assist me in preparing the team for Saturday which is what the whole group is focussed on," said Lambert.
