As Chelsea slumped to a 3-1 defeat at the hands of Paris Saint-Germain on Wednesday, the differing fortunes of goalkeepers Petr Cech and Thibaut Courtois, currently on loan at Atletico Madrid, will not have gone unnoticed.
The Belgian shot-stopper, as he has been all season, was in sensational form at Camp Nou, making a number of telling saves – notably to deny Lionel Messi and Xavi.
Atleti dug in to claim a 1-1 draw against Barcelona, thanks in no small part to the on-loan Chelsea keeper, and will take a slim advantage back to the Estadio Vincente Calderon. It is easy to see why the Liga club are so keen to keep him in the Spanish capital.
The Blues, meanwhile, conceded three times against PSG; the first a thunderbolt from Ezequiel Lavezzi, the second an own goal as Cech failed to command his box and the third a near-post effort that should have been easily gobbled up by the Czech international.
Goal international football writer Peter Staunton believes it is time for Chelsea to back their 21-year-old keeper, who has spent the last three years on loan in Madrid, and send Cech out to pasture next season following a performance full of errors at the Parc des Princes.
What do you think? Who should be Chelsea's No.1 keeper next season? Should Cech be dropped in favour of his younger understudy? Has Courtois now overtaken his 31-year-old counterpart in terms of ability and pedigree?
