Spurs chairman Daniel Levy met with Van Gaal in Holland in December before holding a follow-up meeting with the 62-year-old in London last month.

Van Gaal turned down the chance to take over from Andre Villas-Boas as Tottenham boss as he refused to job share with his role with Holland.

Tim Sherwood was appointed instead on an 18-month contract and his impact on results and style will be reviewed at the end of the season.

Sherwood is understood to be willing to step aside and remain at the club under Van Gaal if he is offered the right position to learn from the Dutchman.

There is an increasing sense both at Tottenham and in Holland that the former Ajax, Barcelona and Bayern Munich manager will move to north London in the summer.

Van Gaal is considered by far the outstanding candidate should Levy make another managerial change in the summer, despite links with Ajax coach Frank De Boer.

Van Gaal has publicly expressed his desire to work in the Premier League next season, saying he will retire unless the right opportunity comes up.

“Look at my CV. I have won a trophy every season during my club career,” Van Gaal said last month.

“I am a winner and craving a trophy. This is why I am sick of being a national coach. I only see the players eight times a year. I am not enjoying the job of national coach at all.

“After the World Cup I want to coach a big club again and win trophies. Otherwise I will retire.’’
