Southampton did enough to beat Manchester City, says Fonte

The Saints ended a run of three defeats on the spin with a draw against Manuel Pellegrini's men, but the Portuguese defender feels his side deserved more than a point
Jose Fonte was happy to end Southampton’s three-game losing streak, but was disappointed they could not grab all three points against Manchester City.

The Saints had lost to Arsenal, Chelsea and Aston Villa in consecutive games prior to Saturday's encounter, finally ending their losing run with a 1-1 draw against Manuel Pellegrini's side.

33/1 Everton are 33/1 with BetVictor to finish in the top four
The south coast side moved to eighth in the Premier League table following the result, but the Portuguese centre-back believes his side were more than a match for City and deserved to win the contest.

“I’m happy with the way that we ended a run of three defeats,” Fonte told the club's official website. "I’m not happy with the result because I think we were the stronger team and that we did enough to get the three points.

“However, it’s a point against a very good team, a top team who have spent millions and have a lot of the top players in the world.

“They had a few chances, of course, but they are Manchester City and they have quality players. We had our chances too, and we could have scored as well many more goals so we could have won the game.

“We believe in what we do, we have a philosophy, we know our style of play and we just need to keep doing what we do well.

“We knew that having gone behind we were going to have to step up our game. Sometimes you have to give the opponents credit, but I thought that we showed a lot of resilience, character and belief to do well."
