The 50-year-old was delighted with the youngster's impact but asked for his player to be given time to develop following recent praise, after he opened the scoring on Saturday

West Brom manager Steve Clarke praised the performance of Saido Berahino after he scored in their 2-0 victory over Crystal Palace but warned to 'keep the level of expectation down'.

The 20-year-old, who entered the game as a first-half substitute in place of the injured Billy Jones, opened the scoring for his side with a fine left-footed shot inside the area to score his sixth goal this season.

But Clarke feels the club's academy graduate, who is in negotiations to improve on his £850-a-week contact, should be given time to develop.

"Saido [Berahino] came in and he did fantastic," he said in his post-match press-conference. "We’re in negotiations with Saido’s representatives and if I was the club I would get it done as soon as possible.

"He’s a young boy that, eight weeks ago, nobody was talking about him. You have to keep the level of expectation down. In this country. we’re too quick to push people forward as the next big thing.

"In my personal opinion, he’s not quite ready for a full international. But it’s not for me to tell Roy how to do his job, though that is my personal opinion. Give the boy time to grow and develop."

The Baggies clinched victory with a headed goal from Gareth McAuley, although Crystal Palace caretaker manager Keith Millen believes his side were unlucky, citing 'small margins' as the difference.

"To go in 1-0 down at half time was disappointing," he admitted. "Its small margins. We created enough chances to be back in the game and we should have been a least probably 1-1.

"To go down 2-0 is hard but fair play to our lads they tried hard. We need to learn very quickly. From the last two games, I don’t think you can accuse the players of not being together or not working hard.

"So as far as the team spirit is concerned I’ve got no complaints with that. There is a lack of belief but this is where we need to stay strong, as they’re the ones that need to keep going and get us out of it."
