Newcastle boss Pardew praises axed Ben Arfa attitude

The France international was left out of the Magpies' starting XI for Saturday's 2-1 win over Cardiff City, but the Toon boss has been pleased with the 26-year-old's response
Alan Pardew has praised Hatem Ben Arfa's attitude after he was dropped for Newcastle's 2-1 victory over Cardiff City on Saturday.

The Frenchman started in Monday's 3-2 defeat to Everton, though was substituted at half-time with the Magpies three goals down, before being replaced in the starting XI to face Cardiff by Papiss Cisse.

The 26-year-old was limited to just four minutes of action off the bench at the Cardiff City Stadium, but Pardew has been impressed with Ben Arfa's response to being dropped.

"Hatem is a great player for us," said Pardew. "His application and his acceptance of the decision was spot on and he's growing as a person."

Pardew was quick to deny reports that Ben Arfa was unhappy or had been axed due to a lack of work-rate, and reiterated his happiness with the Frenchman's application in training and on the field.

"I don't think some of the things that are said about him are actually true," he added.

"He's been very good this week, accepted the decision, and he got his reward because he walked off as part of a winning team."

Ben Arfa has been at Newcastle since 2011 and had started each of his side's five previous fixtures in the Premier League this season.
