The midfielder was afforded his first start for his new club since joining from Wigan on deadline day against Newcastle, and is now hoping for a more regular first-team berth
James McCarthy is happy with the start to his Everton career but is keen to kick on and show the club's fans what he can do.

The Republic of Ireland international followed Roberto Martinez from Wigan to Goodison Park on transfer deadline day but did not make his full league debut until their win over Newcastle on Monday.

He completed 88 per cent of his 58 passes during the game and earned praise from his manager for enabling Everton to control the midfield and the 22-year-old is now hoping for a long run in the team after enjoying his first start.

"It was brilliant to get out there in front of the home fans," he told the club's official website. "It's what you dream of as a kid to come and play at such a big stadium like Goodison.

"The fans were different class and it was a real honour to get my first start, especially at home.

"Obviously there's Gareth in there alongside me and Ross just in front. I really enjoyed it but I still need to keep my head down and carry on working hard, because it still comes down to day-to-day basics."

Everton will look to maintain their unbeaten start in the Premier League on Saturday when they travel to the Etihad Stadium to face Manchester City.
