Former owner Mohamed Al Fayed, a friend of the now-deceased pop icon who visited the stadium in 1999, had the statue installed over two years ago, though was met with stiff resistance from the club's supporters at the time.

Khan made the decision to dispose of the statue at the behest of supporters, saying he was acting in the best interests of the club.
"Our supporters' views on the statue have been made clear," he told reporters. "I respect Mr Al Fayed and know he had good intentions in paying an individual tribute.
"However, the removal of the statue is the right thing for Fulham football club."
