Cole came close to moving to Ligue 1 side St Etienne over the summer after his initial release from West Ham, but the move failed to materialise and the forward has remained without a club since.
However, Hammers boss Sam Allardyce has moved to swoop for Cole as he looks to bolster his striking options with Andy Carroll still on the sidelines.
Cole started his career at Chelsea, spending time on loan at Wolves, Charlton and Aston Villa, before sealing a permanent switch to Upton Park in 2006.
He went on to net 59 goals in 237 games for the club but looks poised to return for a second spell at the east London club.
