Lampard faces England fitness battle

The Chelsea midfielder is in a race against time to recover from the achilles injury that has kept him out of pre-season as Roy Hodgson prepares to pick squad for Scotland match
Chelsea midfielder Frank Lampard could miss England’s upcoming clash against Scotland as he continues to recover from an Achilles injury.

The 35-year-old sat out all three matches of the Blue’s pre-season tour of the Far East and also missed the first match of the US tour as Chelsea beat Inter Milan 2-0 in Indianapolis.

The Blues are now set to travel New York and Miami before playing the final match of the tour against Roma in Washington and manager Jose Mourinho is hoping Lampard can play some part in those games.

"Frank [Lampard] is recovering but of course we don't want to take risks," Mourinho told reporters.

"Hopefully he plays [on the tour], I won't say the second match but maybe the third or fourth."

Chelsea are due to play in New York City on Sunday and in Miami on either Tuesday or Wednesday - before their final pre-season game of the summer against Roma in Washington on August 10 - eight days before their curtain-raiser against Hull.

England manager Roy Hodgson is sure to be monitoring the situation as he prepares to select a squad to take on Scotland at Wembley on August 14, just four days before Chelsea’s Premier League opener at home to the newly promoted Tigers.
