Manchester City captain Vincent Kompany says the club must strengthen in the summer if they are to be key players in a Premier League title race that he believes might include seven teams next season.
Managerless City easily surrendered their title to rivals Manchester United last term but were the only challengers, and Kompany anticipates the cluster of clubs in and around the top four will be serious contenders for top spot next term.
Four of the top six will be under new management next season, offering a potentially intriguing subtext to the title race, and Kompany has called on the City hierarchy to improve the playing squad and avoid making the same mistakes as they did last summer.
“I’ve seen every single club strengthen every season. Teams can come from nowhere and win the league," he told The Sun.
“You cannot rule out Liverpool, Tottenham and even Everton were really good this year. Then you have the usuals like Arsenal, Chelsea and United.
“But there is a chance to strengthen our team and compete again for the league.”
