The 31-year-old struggled initially after moving to the Magpies before establishing himself as a key player and believes the club’s recent buys are only going to get better

Newcastle United defender Fabricio Coloccini has backed the club’s January arrivals to improve next season after helping them to retain their Premier League status.

Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa, Mathieu Debuchy, Massadio Haidara, Moussa Sissoko and Yoan Gouffran all arrived midway through the season as Magpies boss Alan Pardew looked to strengthen his struggling squad.

And while the club have toiled near the bottom of the table, Coloccini has backed the recent buys to go from strength-to-strength next season following a settling in period in English football.

Coloccini initially struggled to settle but he believes it’s not unusual to get off to a slow start in new surroundings.

"That's normal," he told reporters. "The same happened with me - the first year was very difficult.

"But I think the players who came, they are doing very well. It's quicker and maybe they feel a bit tired but it's normal. And next year they will be better for it."

Newcastle face Arsenal on the final day of the Premier League season on Sunday.
