thumbnail Hello,

The Argentine international has been at the centre of controversy after he tried to engineer a move back to his homeland but insists he would never leave the club in a mess

Newcastle captain Fabricio Coloccini has dismissed claims he wanted to leave the club when they needed him most.

Coloccini returned to Argentina in February to undergo treatment on a back injury and much was made from TV footage that emerged from his trip.

18/1 Newcastle are 18/1 to beat QPR 3-1 on Sunday
The former Deportivo La Coruna defender will hold talks at the end of the season about his future at St. James’ Park but Coloccini insists his main focus is securing Premier League survival with the club.

“I heard people said I wouldn’t play because I wanted to leave – that I don’t give 100%,” Coloccini told The Chronicle.

“I don’t like to speak to the press too much because I’m like that. But I try to speak on the pitch. I can do those things well, but I always give 100%.”

Coloccini returned to a shattered Newcastle defence, who had just conceded six goals at home to Liverpool, against West Ham and helped the Magpies secure their first clean sheet in four games.

And the Argentina centre-back wants his team-mates to build on that performance in the last two remaining games, starting with bottom club QPR on Sunday.

He added: “We played well in the first half against West Ham. Now we have to play well for 90 minutes.

“I love playing football. I don’t care what happens in my future, I just want to play. On Sunday we have a game – I want to play. If we had another game on Tuesday I’d want to play in that.”
