Sunderland to appeal Sessegnon red card against Aston Villa

Black Cats boss Paolo Di Canio has confirmed the club will attempt to get the 28-year-old’s second-half sending off for a late challenge on Yacouba Sylla rescinded
Sunderland boss Paolo Di Canio has confirmed the club will appeal the red card Stephane Sessegnon received in their 6-1 loss away to Aston Villa.

14/1 Sunderland are 14/1 with Paddy Power to go down
Ex-PSG forward Sessegnon was given a straight red card for a challenge on Yacouba Sylla after 70 minutes, with his side already 4-1 down.

However, Di Canio believes Sessgnon did not intend to hurt Sylla, and wants the dismissal rescinded and the three-game ban which the 28-year-old faces scrapped.

He told reporters: “There was not a straight is not a bad challenge.

“We saw the clip straight away in the dressing room. There was no intention to damage the opponent, so we are going to appeal.”

Sunderland currently sit in 15th spot in the Premier League on 37 points - the same amount as Newcastle United and Aston Villa, and five clear of Wigan.

Should Sessegnon's appeal be rejected, the Benin international would miss the Black Cats' matches against Stoke, Southampton and Tottenham.
