Reading financially strong enough to cope with relegation, says owner Zinarevich

The Russian has allayed fear that the club could overextend themselves in the Championship last term, and has vowed to back Nigel Adkins in the transfer window
Reading owner Anton Zinarevich has insisted the club will be in a healthy financial position next season, despite their relegation from the Premier League.

The Royals saw their demotion back to the Championship confirmed on Sunday, following a 0-0 draw with QPR, after just one season back in England's top flight.

And Zingarevich, who took control of Reading from Sir John Madejski last year, has dismissed any regrets over the heavy financial rewards that come with Premier League status and allayed fears of the club overextending themselves next term.

8/13 Reading are 8/13 with BetVictor to finish bottom of the Premier League
"We are in a good place financially," Zingarevich told BBC Radio Berkshire. "The club was run in a prudent way before [he took charge] and that is how it will be run in the future.

"Obviously the new TV deal for the Premier League would have helped, but we will come back in 12 months. I don't want to think about what would have happened. We are focused on what we want to achieve in the next 12 months."

Former Southampton manager Nigel Adkins was brought in with five games to go in an attempt to stop the rot, but just two points accrued since failed to move Reading off the bottom of the table.

And Zinarevich has vowed to back Adkins in the summer transfer window as they look for an immediate return to the top tier.

"We need to give the manager all the tools he needs," he added. "We will sit down and discuss specifics and understand what his wishes are in terms of the current group.

"For me it's not the amount that needs to be spent but how you spend the money. We need to go out and sign the right players for us. It is like any investment.

"We have a new manager who I have total faith in and most people can see what we are trying to do on the pitch."
