Benitez was given the job until the end of the season after Roberto Di Matteo was sacked in November, but his appointment was greeted with boos and jeers, largely because of comments made about the club while manager of Liverpool.

He told reporters: "I'm managing a top side and given the circumstances of everything around I think we are doing a good job.
"People all around can argue about it but with the circumstances we have had, the number of games, the problems with the Africa Cup of Nations and going to Japan [for the Club World Cup], you put everything together, we are there.
"We can achieve another title and we can finish in the top three. People have been asking me how I think I will be remembered when I leave Chelsea. I believe it will be as a professional - someone who worked hard, always trying to do my best.
"On Sunday at Liverpool, I was trying to win the game until the last minute - the 97th minute. People can see what I have achieved in the past. We are talking two years ago not 20 years ago.
"If you are at a top side, everyone can see you. A professional - not just a fan - can analyse things. I think we have a lot of positives."
