Carrick: Every title win gets more special

Manchester United sealed their 20th league crown with a win over Aston Villa on Monday night, with the former Tottenham midfielder notching his fifth championship
Manchester United midfielder Michael Carrick says every title win gets more special after he sealed his fifth Premier League crown on Monday night.

United won their 20th league title with victory over Aston Villa, with the former Tottenham man set to pick up his fifth winners' medal in a standout season that has seen him shortlisted for the PFA Player of the Year award.

And following last year's final day loss to rivals City, Carrick admits that the character showed by his team-mates makes it a special season.

"It is an incredible achievement," Carrick told reporters. "Every year we win it just gets more special. The sense of achievement gets greater, for the manager and the club.

"This was a special one this year, the way we ended last year. We could have gone two ways and let it affect us and faded away. But we bounced back. We are proud of all the lads for showing character.

"We were written off at the start of the season, as we are most seasons, but we have managed to come out on top. It is a special feeling."

Ryan Giggs set up the first goal of the evening for Robin van Persie before going on to win his 13th championship, and Carrick hailed the "unbelievable" standards the 39-year-old has set at the club.

He added: "You keep talking about him but what else is there left to say!? It is sensational that he is still able to do that after all this time.

"It is not just physical, it is mental, having the drive and desire to do it every day. The standard he has set is unbelievable.

"He is a legend. It is a throwaway comment too often. But he is a legend. It is a pleasure to play with him and work with him every day."
