'This is what we play football for' - Rooney delighted with Manchester United's title win

The Red Devils striker admitted that the way his side side lost the title last season was hard to take but says he is delighted all their hard work from this campaign has paid off
Wayne Rooney insists Manchester United deserved to win their 20th Premier League title following a 3-0 victory over Aston Villa on Monday evening.

The England international, who played a deeper more central role in the win, provided Robin van Persie with a beautifully weighted long pass to setup the Dutchman's amazing volleyed effort in the first half.

The former Arsenal man had also opened the scoring earlier in the game, a fast start which Rooney believes helped United to a thee-nil win.

"It's what we've worked for all year, we deserve it. we started really fast today, it was a fantastic night, and we're really pleased," Rooney told Sky Sports.

"When you lose the title the way we did it was hard to take. we all dug in deep, worked together, the squad did fantastic to put ourselves in position and we finished the job off.

"You can never take anything for granted in football."

When asked what makes Manchester United so special, Rooney said: "The manager's got a great desire and a great winning mentality and we've got fantastic players. we all dug in together and we deserve it I think.

"We had a lot of young players and they've moved on this season.

"It's been a great season for me, we've won the league tittle, that's what you play for, to win trophies, and i'm delighted."

The Red Devils now must win their remaining for games to break Chelsea's record of 95 points in one term.
