The forward hopes that the Magpies can recover from their derby defeat to eclipse their rivals, with the two clubs level with just four games left of the season

Newcastle forward Yoan Gouffran hopes that his side can cheer up their fans by finishing above rivals Sunderland in the Premier League.

The 26-year-old headed in the opening goal in the Magpies' 1-1 draw away at West Brom on Saturday, while the Black Cats defeated Everton 1-0 at home to leave the two North East clubs level on 37 points with four games to play.

The Frenchman, however, looked back to his side's 3-0 home defeat in the Tyne-Wear derby on April 14 and told reporters: "We know the derby was a very important match, so we were disappointed because we really wanted to play well in it.

"Even though I am not from Newcastle, I still understood the importance of the derby. It's a historic fixture.

"We don't pay too much attention to what Sunderland are doing but it would be great for the fans if we could finish above them.

"We had to show we are a very strong team and to forget last week's result," Gouffran continued. "We spoke a lot after the derby because there were things we wanted to improve on. You saw in the first half the improvements we made but we just weren't able to sustain it. Maybe that's because we used a lot of energy.

"But we're confident we can escape relegation. This point could be very important but it was disappointing because we should have scored more."
