The Fulham boss was dismayed by Andre Marriner's decision to send off the midfielder, arguing that it "spoiled the game a bit", but was pleased with his side's response

Fulham manager Martin Jol feels that referee Andree Marriner was harsh to send off Steve Sidwell in his side's Premier League defeat to with Arsenal.

The midfielder was dismissed in the 12th minute for a late challenge on Mikel Arteta, having only returned in that match following a previous three-match suspension.

A goal from Per Mertesacker shortly before half-time was all that ultimately separated the sides, though the Gunners had Olivier Giroud ejected late in the game.

Jol told BBC Sport after the game: "I would not have given the red card but I am not subjective.

"I think it was a mistimed tackle but he caught the guy. It wasn't his intention."

The Dutchman was pleased, however, with his side's response after going down to 10 men, arguing that they edged the match on chances.

"[The red card] spoiled the game a bit but we fought like lions and had better chances than them," he continued. "In the first half we did ever so well but conceded a soft goal."
