Luiz is key to Chelsea success - Benitez

While the Spaniard knows his whole squad must be used to deal with his team's fixture congestion, he did stress how valuable the Brazilian defender has become to the Blues
Rafa Benitez believes David Luiz will be a key figure in Chelsea's bid for Europa League glory and a top four place in the final weeks of the season.

Despite crashing out of the FA Cup to Manchester City in Sunday’s semi-final, the Blues are still competing on two fronts with a Europa League tie against Basel next Thursday following crucial Premier League clashes with Fulham and Liverpool.

Chelsea are fourth in the table, level on points with Tottenham in fifth, and face a fierce fight to secure Champions League football next season.

“David Luiz is an important player and is doing well, but there are a lot of them,” Benitez told the club's official website.

“I don't want to give too much credit to him and not to the others, but he's a key player for us and will be a key player in the future.

“We have had a lot of games and still have another nine or 10 to play. All the players are important and will be important until the end. We have to manage the squad and we will do it until the end.”

The ex-Inter Milan and Liverpool boss also stressed that his side still have the energy and determination to succeed this season, partly as a result of his squad rotation.

“Managing the squad is part of our job and you can see that still we have some legs and determination to win games,” he added.
