Al Habsi certain of Wigan's Premier League survival

The Oman international goalkeeper is adamant that the Latics will pull off their annual last-minute escape from relegation, despite the FA Cup final adding further pressure
Wigan goalkeeper Ali Al Habsi is adamant that his side will avoid relegation and stay in the Premier League for another year, despite their upcoming FA Cup final against Manchester City adding further pressure.

The Latics booked their first-ever place in the final when they beat Millwall 2-0 at Wembley on Saturday but in the league they still have a lot of hard work to do, with a three-point gap to safety needing to be bridged over the last seven games of the season.

Despite the pressure facing his side, Al Habsi - who has experience of last-minute pushes to safety after he was involved in Wigan's final-day survival in 2011 and was part of last season's side who won seven of their last nine games to beat the drop and finish in 15th - is confident that they will be able to pull off another miracle.

"We will do it," he told reporters. "We will stay in the Premier League.

"The FA Cup won't distract us. Our squad is big enough to cope. We have been in this situation many times. We believe in ourselves and we will be okay.

"We are a small club and we don't have that many fans but they all believe in the team.

"To reach the FA Cup final for the first time is amazing but I can promise it won't be a distraction.

"It all has to be done in order: first the league, then the final, then Europe. Brilliant."
