Aston Villa goalkeeper Guzan: Survival all that matters

The American shot-stopper says that he is not concerned about keeping clean sheets from now to the end of the season as long as the Villans succeed in beating the drop
Aston Villa goalkeeper Brad Guzan insists that he does not care how many goals he concedes as long as his side avoid relegation.

The American has displaced Shay Given as Paul Lambert's first-choice keeper after a number of impressive displays throughout the season but, despite his best efforts, the Villans have not recorded a clean sheet in their last 20 matches.

11/8 The Villans are 11/8 with Paddy Power to be relegated from the Premier League this season
However, Guzan told reporters: "A clean sheet would be nice - I feel confident and sharp - but we don't get caught up in stats.

"At this point it's all about winning, I don't care if we win five or four. If we win games, that's what it's about. It's about fighting for each other.

"We have to make sure we come out on top regardless of the scoreline. You have to limit the mistakes and chances we gave away against Liverpool.

"It didn't go our way but it's a bit of bump in the road."

Paul Lambert's youthful side must bounce back from defeat to Liverpool during their trip to fellow strugglers Stoke City and the American is backing his team-mates to react.

Guzan added: "It's not the result we wanted. We'll look to go again and there's a lot of football to be played. We've shown before that we can bounce back.

"Regardless of whether we're in the bottom three, you look at the table and see how tight it is.

"There's a lot of football to be played and lot of points to pick up. You win three matches and people talk about Europe.

"So you try not to get caught up in looking at the table. You focus on yourself, if you do that, you'll be fine."
