Lampard: Tambling supportive in pursuit of Chelsea scoring record

The longtime Blues midfielder says the club's all-time leading scorer has endorsed his bid to become the new record holder but knows timing is running out at Stamford Bridge
Chelsea legend Bobby Tambling has backed Frank Lampard in his pursuit of becoming the club's all-time leading scorer.

The 71-year-old sits atop the Blues' charts with 202 goals in 370 career appearances, whilst Lampard is just behind with 200 total strikes in 595 appearances.

The England international has spoken of his admiration for Tambling and says that the ex-striker has offered his blessing as the 34-year-old chases history.

"We chatted about the goals. He has always been very supportive of me in terms of the record," Lampard told BBC Sport.

"He is an absolutely great man. We just chatted about Chelsea and the team and how well he is and he said hello to the family."

Although Chelsea are still to offer Lampard an extension to his current contract, he insists he is remaining calm and taking it game-by-game as he aims to surpass Tambling's haul.

"The record is within touching distance and I keep getting reminded and try not to think about it too much," he continued.

"If I can keep my head down, stay fit and keep playing my games then hopefully I will get there. Simple as that."
