The centre-back is refusing to take negative reviews of his performances to heart after a selection of Toffees' supporters chose to vent their frustrations about him on Twitter

Everton defender John Heitinga is refusing to be affected by criticism from a section of the club’s supporters.

The 29-year-old’s below-par displays over recent weeks have prompted fans to vent their frustrations towards him on Twitter and on matchdays.

But Heitinga has vowed to ignore taunts online as he believes it helps to bring him closer to the club’s supporters, although he is keen to get more favourable reviews.

He told the Liverpool Echo: "I don't really care what people say. I'm on Twitter because I want to show a little bit of myself to the supporters. I hope to get respect when I put something on Twitter, and see people react positively.

"If the response is only negative, then the time will come when no-one is on Twitter any more. The gap between the fans will become bigger.

"At the moment, the gap can become smaller because you can respond to supporters' questions and speak to them.

"I can understand the fans were frustrated [by the 3-0 FA Cup quarter-final loss to Wigan] but they must realise that the players were frustrated too."
