The Wigan youngster has faced criticism on Twitter for his horror-challenge on Massadio Haidara from the versatile Magpies man, who is a former Latics player himself
The 21-year-old was making his full Premier League debut for the Latics but sparked controversy and a half-time brawl with his tackle on the full-back, himself a substitute for the injured Mathieu Debuchy.
The incident did not escape the attention of Taylor, a former Wigan player, who criticised McManaman on his personal Twitter site.
"Wow. Not even a yellow #baffled," said the 28-year-old, who is currently missing due to a long-term knee problem.
"Nothing to do with the scoreline an the fact it was a red but as a footballer it's the definition of a 's***house tackle'. I hope Sadio is ok."
Taylor also criticised the match officials, though referee Mark Halsay stated he did not have a clear view of the incident in the aftermath of the match, which saw Wigan steal a 2-1 victory thanks to a late strike from Arouna Kone.
"In them few minutes after the tackle why can't the ref or the 4th official look at a video for 5 seconds and help the ref out. #Sortitout."
18th-placed Wigan are unmoved in the table despite their victory, though it does bring them back to within three points of Aston Villa and safety with a game in hand.
