Liverpool midfielder Allen due to undergo shoulder surgery

The summer signing from Swansea was dropped to the bench for the home game against Tottenham on Sunday afternoon as he deals with a problem that has plagued him since October
Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers has confirmed midfielder Joe Allen will need surgery on a shoulder injury that has troubled him for much of the 2012-13 season.

The 22-year-old was restricted to a place on the bench on Sunday afternoon, with Rodgers replacing the midfielder with Daniel Sturridge for the game against Tottenham.

And the Northern Irish boss explained the reasoning behind his decision prior to kick-off at Anfield.

"We made a change today [against Tottenham] with Joe Allen having been struggling since October with his shoulder and he’ll probably need an operation but it’s an opportunity for Daniel to come in," Rodgers told Sky Sports.

Allen followed his manager from Swansea to the Anfield club this summer for a fee in the region of £15 million and has made 35 appearances for the Reds this season.
