West Ham need a win against Stoke, insists O'Brien

The Hammers find themselves just six points off the relegation zone and the defender wants the gap to increase, starting with a result against the Potters this weekend
West Ham defender Joey O’Brien has called on his side to secure a win against Stoke on Saturday and ease their relegation fears.

The Hammers were denied a point by Gareth Bale’s late strike against Tottenham on Monday and the Irishman believes the club need to start adding points to their performances, to avoid the danger of being hauled into the relegation battle.

He told the club's official website: "It's a massive game for us, especially as we were disappointed with the result against Spurs, so we're looking to go to Stoke and get three points.

"The performance was alright on Monday night, but it's a results business we're in and that's what the manager was saying to us after the game. It doesn't really matter if you're playing well if you're not getting points on the board.

"We have 30 points at the moment and we need to put more on the board as soon as possible. Saturday gives us the chance to do that so hopefully we can take some up there."

The Hammers haven’t won a game away from home in their last eight attempts, and O’Brien believes they need to improve their form on the road in order to beat the dreaded drop.

"It's hard going away from home in the Premier League and we've found it tough this year on the road," he continued.

"We're going there to get a clean sheet and from there hopefully we can push on, create chances and get three points.

"We have to improve away from home, and from my point of view as a defender we want to be as solid as we can be. We've been letting in a lot of goals in the last few games and that's been disappointing.

"We scored two against Spurs, but we conceded three and if you keep on doing that you'll be in trouble."
