The Gunners' boss says his side were on a good run in the league before successive cup defeats at the Emirates Stadium knocked the confidence out of his now nervous players

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger admits that the losses to Blackburn and Bayern Munich in the last week have disrupted his side's Premier League progress, after they left it late to earn a 2-1 win over Aston Villa.

The Gunners crashed out of the FA Cup to Blackburn and surrendered three away goals to Bayern Munich in the Champions League in the last seven days and Wenger was delighted to get a positive result.

"We are on a good run in the [Premier League] and we have been affected by the major disappointments we have had, you can see that in the nerves," he told Sky Sports News.

"We could have scored many many more goals today, but we got the three points and that’s what counts.

“The result was vital today because we had absolutely to win this game, we couldn’t afford to drop points for two reasons,” Wenger added in his post-match press conference.

“The first is that we are in a catch-up situation in the Premier League, and as well we come out of two massive disappointments.”

The result saw Arsenal move to within one point of north London rivals Tottenham in fourth place, and Wenger believes his side cannot afford to drop any more points.

“We are in a catch-up situation,” explained the Gunners’ boss. “We are dependant a little bit on the results of the other teams, but lastly on our consistency.

“The key for us is to be consistent and that’s why today a draw would have been a very, very bad result for us.”

The victory over Villa ends a tough weak for the Arsenal manager, who was quick to dismiss the effect such criticism has on performances.

“You do your job,” Wenger added. “You do your job and you focus on the next game and try to win the next game, that’s what I did.

“I’m not 30 years in this job, at the top level, and be destroyed by people saying I don’t know what I am doing, because I would have stopped this job a long time [ago].
