The former Arsenal front-man joined United in the summer for a fee of £24 million, and has been a huge success helping the Red Devils surge into a 12-point lead at the top of the table.

Van Persie is currently the Premier League's top scorer with 19 goals, but Rooney says he has become a target in the United dressing room.

"I'd have to say Robin. He's not the brightest!" Rooney said in a Google hangout with DHL.

"As much of a good footballer he is, he's definitely not the brightest off the pitch and it’s just easy to get to him.

"There's a few who like to joke around. There's no-one who stays really quiet and out of it."

Meanwhile, midfielder Tom Cleverley says there is no shortage of characters at Old Trafford and was happy to identify the major players/

"Team jokers?" said Cleverley. "There’s a few characters in our dressing-room.

"Wazza [Rooney] is always taking your phone if you leave it lying about. Rio [Ferdinand], Anderson, Welbeck, they're all bubbly characters. I just try to lay low and stay out of it."
