Newcastle striker Gouffran could be back for Southampton

Scans have revealed that the Frenchman's shin injury he suffered against Tottenham is not as serious as first thought, and he may be fit for their next Premier League match
Newcastle United have been handed an injury boost with the news that their new forward Yoan Gouffran could be fit to play in their next Premier League game.

The Frenchman was taken to hospital amid concerns that he had suffered a broken leg after an accidental clash with Tottenham defender Kyle Walker, but scans have revealed that the injury he suffered to his shin is not as serious as first feared.

Gouffran will definitely miss the club's next two matches against Metalist Kharkiv in the Europa League as he is cup-tied, but could be back for their Premier League match against Southampton.

Manager Alan Pardew confirmed that the club had received positive news from X-rays conducted at a London hospital on Saturday, and that Gouffran is nursing a "heavy blow".

"It's not as serious as it could be, so that is positive news," Pardew told reporters.

"Yoan was fantastic for us at Tottenham and his exit changed the course of the game, but hopefully he will not be out for long."
