The Villans manager is excited at the potential of his Belgian striker, who scored twice and assisted another to help his side to an impressive 3-1 win at Anfield

Aston Villa manager Paul Lambert has hailed the qualities of Christian Benteke after the Belgian striker spearheaded the Villans to a surprise 3-1 success at Liverpool.

Brendan Rodgers' men went into the game having lost just once in their previous 11 Premier League outings, but relegation-threatened Villa shocked the hosts by going three goals up inside an hour before conceding a late consolation to Steven Gerrard.

Post-match, it was 22-year-old Benteke who took the plaudits after scoring twice to take his tally to eight for the season, while also laying on the other for Andreas Weimann with an improvised back flick.

"I have seen that sort of thing all along," Lambert told the club’s official website.

"You run out of things to say about the big guy. He's unbelievable. He's 22 and he can be anything he wants. He's a top lad too which is important.

"His partnerships - whether it's with Andi, Darren, Gabby - it seems everyone likes playing alongside him. He's been sensational for us.

"There aren't many can push him off the ball that's for sure. He's got the potential to be one of the best.

"I don't want to put too much pressure on him but the potential for someone as young as that is an absolutely frightening thought."

Lambert went onto praise the performance of Benteke's strike partner Weimann, whose goal added to the two scored in the week at Norwich to take Villa into the semi-finals of the Capital One Cup.

"Andi is a natural finisher," the Scot continued.

"His goal was world-class when you look at the build-up. Benteke was outstanding and Weimann was fantastic.

"We looked a threat with Christian and Andi up front and I thought we deserved to win the game."
