thumbnail Hello,

The former Barcelona man returned to the first team for the 0-0 draw against Fulham, and believes that his side's defensive improvements will play dividends in the future

Oriol Romeu has expressed delight at returning to the Chelsea first team for the west London derby on Wednesday and is targeting further appearances.

The former Barcelona youngster came on as a substitute in Rafa Benitez's first game in charge against Manchester City, and seemingly impressed his fellow Spaniard enough to earn a starting spot against Fulham.

But, despite being pleased with his starting berth, Romeu rued his side's inability to get a win.

"I was happy to be involved for the whole game, but the main thing I want is for the team to win, which we didn't," Romeu told the club's official website.

"We didn't concede a goal, which was positive, but a club like Chelsea should always be focused on winning the game, so it was disappointing.

"Every player needs to be ready when a chance comes along. Obviously it's not as easy as you would like when you haven't been playing regularly, but it's just about going out there and playing football in the way you always have done."

The 21-year-old saw a run in the first team ended by injury last season, but is hoping to remain fit this time around.

"That's what I want, and hopefully this time around I won't get any injuries so that I can keep playing throughout the months ahead," he continued.

"I always try to train hard and stay fit, but the main thing when you have an opportunity is to play well in order to help the team."

Chelsea have now scored just three goals in their last five Premier League outings, but have also kept clean sheets in both games since Benitez took over.

Romeu believes that this defensive solidity will pay dividends in the future, as the club's array of attacking talent inevitably start to click once again.

"Once you are solid at the back the quality in attack has to come through," he continued.

"It hasn't happened for the last two games but I'm sure with the players we have the goals will start to come again.

"This part of our game has to improve, but you also know that if you are not conceding any goals, you only have to score one to get the three points, and that's the most important thing."
