The former Colombia international enjoyed a fruitful two-year spell at St James' Park as a player, scoring nine goals in 48 games.
And the 42-year-old has now claimed that he is close to a comeback, after being offered a role on Alan Pardew's staff.
"The club's owners called me and I said yes," he told Jaimedinas.com, a local Colombian radio station.

Asprilla also had kind words for the city of Newcastle and revealed he often watches the Magpies when over in England.
"It's a nice opportunity for me, I like the city and whenever I go to England, I always go to St. James [Park]," he continued.
"I want to teach everything I learned [at] the club."
