Manchester City have confirmed that they have appointed former Barcelona man Txiki Begiristain as their new director of football.

Following through on a plan which Goal.com exclusively revealed in January, the former Blaugrana man joins Ferran Soriano, already installed as chief executive at the Etihad Stadium in August, as the Premier League champions restructure behind the scenes.

Begiristain held a similiar position with Barcelona for seven years up until 2010, having played with the Catalan club during his career.

He will take on the responsibility of heading up the English club's recruitment policy as he works closely alongside Soriano, having brought the likes of Samuel Eto'o, Ronaldinho and Daniel Alves to Camp Nou during his time there.

Goal.com understands that City remain interested in Esteve Calzada, the ex-Barca marketing director who was another key player in Begiristain and Soriano's backstage group which was credited with much of the Catalan club's recent success.
