The goalkeeper has been replaced by Brad Guzan, but is hoping to be recalled by Paul Lambert, and revealed Darren Bent is frustrated at being on the substitutes bench

Shay Given has revealed he is "gutted" not to be Aston Villa's current first choice goalkeeper, but is hoping to impress his manager Paul Lambert and force his way back in.

The 36-year-old endured a tough start to the season - with Lambert dropping him following their 3-1 defeat against Everton, and Brad Guzan taking over.

Despite conceding that it can be frustrating watching on from the sidelines, the former Manchester City man is keen to regain his starting spot.

"Frustration can sometimes boil over when you're not playing, but for me it's important that I keep my head down and work hard and please God my chance comes round again," Given told reporters.

"I am gutted that I am not playing in the team, that's natural, and hopefully if I work hard I'll get back in the side."

The veteran shot stopper also revealed club team-mate Darren Bent is "frustrated" after being a substitute for Villa's previous two league matches, but believes the form of summer signing Christian Benteke has given his manager greater competition for places.

He added: "[Bent] is frustrated a little bit at the minute of course, but we've got Benteke, who's a very powerful young forward, and he's done very, very well. It's competition for places and that's what we need."
