Steven Taylor targets Tyne-Wear derby return

The Magpies defender has his sights set on a return against Sunderland in the North East clash after recovering from the calf injury which has ruled him out of the last two games
Newcastle United's Steven Taylor has targeted the Sunderland derby on October 21 to make his return from a calf injury.

The defender aims to resume full training next week after 10 days of strength and conditioning work to help recover from the injury.

"The main thing for me is being 100 per cent fit for the Sunderland game," the 26-year-old told the Magpies official website.

And I didn't want to prepare for that match carrying any little niggles or anything like that."

Taylor will return to training on Tuesday and will use the international break to continue his rehabilitation until then.

He added: "The medical staff has been spot on - like they always are - and hopefully taking that little bit of extra time on the injury will enable me to be fit for the game at the Stadium of Light.

"I'm due back in full training next Tuesday, a full five days before the derby, and until then I'll keep on top of my fitness and conditioning work while a lot of the lads are away on international duty."
