thumbnail Hello,

The Liverpool captain has endured a mixed start to the season and faces new competition for places as the Northern Irish coach looks to make his mark on life at Anfield

POLL

It has, largely, been out with the old and in with the new since Brendan Rodgers took over at Liverpool.

The likes of Jose Enrique and Jamie Carragher have been ousted to make way for academy graduates Martin Kelly and Andre Wisdom, while at the other end of the field youngsters Suso and Raheem Sterling were both handed starts in Sunday's draw against Stoke City.

The bright performances delivered by those prospects for the future have shifted the spotlight and pressure on to the previously unthinkable targets of Pepe Reina and, most notably, the most senior member of the starting XI who faced the Potters: Steven Gerrard.

The captain and talismanic midfielder has been inspirational down the years at Anfield but a combination of his advancing years and mixed early-season form has called his place in the team into question, with doubts remaining over whether his style suits Rodgers' possession-based philosophy.

The signings of Joe Allen and Nuri Sahin have added further competition for places, with the former arguably the Reds' player of the season so far and the latter quickly adjusting to life in the English top flight.

Jonjo Shelvey, meanwhile, has long been something of an unsung hero for Liverpool but continues to wait for a prolonged spell in the line-up following his red card and subsequent three-game suspension against Manchester United, while Lucas Leiva will pose Rodgers further selection questions when he returns from injury.
