thumbnail Hello,

The Scotland international believes that the Latics strike pair, who both netted in Saturday's draw with Everton, will help his side surge up the Premier League table

Wigan midfielder Shaun Maloney has praised team-mates Arouna Kone and Franco Di Santo, after the duo got on the scoresheet in Saturday's 2-2 draw with Everton.

Roberto Martinez's side put on an encouraging performance at the DW Stadium, only being denied a first win of the season by Leighton Baines' late penalty.

But the 29-year-old, who provided the assist for Kone's opener, believes the pair's current form will help the Latics surge up the table.

"The front two are so vital in the way that we play and I thought they were outstanding in the first half," he told the club's official website.

"Arouna scored and set up a goal and Franco showed he is in top form. If those two perform like that all season it will give us such an advantage over teams in games."

Despite seeing his side fail to hold on to the win, the Scotland international insists Wigan can take confidence from their performance against the Merseyside outfit.

"It felt a little like the games towards the end of last season because of the intensity in the game and the work rate that we put in," Maloney added.

"It was important to stop the run of defeats for our confidence. If we continue to work like that and be as brave as we have been on the ball then hopefully we will start a run of good results when we come back from internationals."
