The England international took to Twitter to confirm that he meant the spectacular strike which rounded off his side's 3-0 victory at the Sports Direct Arena on Sunday
The England international beautifully curled home to wrap up three points at the Sports Direct Arena but replays appeared to show he was aiming to play in team-mate Robin van Persie.
However, following the 3-0 victory on Tyneside, the 23-year-old took to Twitter in order to set the record straight.
"Good performance good win and great fans," Cleverley posted on the social networking website. "Of course I meant it!"
Earlier, Cleverley had spoken of his delight at United posting a win at a ground where they fell to a 3-0 defeat last season.
"We knew it was going to be a tough game and having the start we did was fantastic for us," he told Sky Sports.
"Not just the goals, we were playing really well and we hit them on the counter attack at times, and then I thought we really controlled the second half.
"Away from home any clean sheet is massive and with all the balls that Newcastle put in the box I thought the back four and the goalkeeper were fantastic for us today, and fully deserved the clean sheet."
