The Wales international scored in Wednesday's Champions League win over Olympiakos, and hopes that goal will signal his return to form following a difficult two years

Arsenal midfielder Aaron Ramsey believes he is finally returning to his "old self", after suffering a horrific leg-break against Stoke two years ago.

The 21-year-old scored in Wednesday's Champions League clash with Olympiakos at the Emirates Stadium, as the north London side romped to a 3-1 win.

And, after a year in which he lost Wales coach and mentor Gary Speed in tragic circumstances, Ramsey is hoping his long-standing torment is now over.

“I had a really bad injury and it takes a while to get back to your best,” Ramsay told the Mirror.

“But I’m feeling good, confident again and it’s like I’m getting back to my old self and the form which got me here in the first place.

“It’s always difficult to overcome things like that in life, a lot happened last year for me, there was loads of things going on off the pitch for me as well but I’m feeling happier now and hopefully that’s showing now in my performances.

“I think I grew up a lot as a person while I was going through it. It does make you stronger and it’s just getting over the mental side of it.

“As soon as you get back into it, the confidence thing comes into it, but once you get over that and start playing again it’s a thing of the past then.

“I spoke to a number of people who had similar injuries and they reassured me through it all. They had nothing but good advice and I was patient, didn’t want to rush back and wanted to make sure everything was right.”

Ramsey's return to first-team action has coincided with the comeback of Jack Wilshere from injury, creating healthy competition in the Gunners' midfield.

Wilshere had been sidelined for 14 months and Ramsey sympathises with his team-mate following his own lengthy recovery period.

“You’re not sharp in your mind, you take a bit longer to think things through in your mind which should and normally come natural and it’s little things like that which make such a big difference,” he said.

“That’s how I felt in the second half of last year. Because you’re out for so long, your body is not used to it and I was out for ten or 11 months and after being out for so long it takes a lot longer for your body to get used to it than it used to.

“I had been running around every day since I can remember, since I was eight years old so it takes a long time to get used to but hopefully from now I can have a good season."
