thumbnail Hello,

The 25-year-old Belgium international has adapted quickly to life in England and praised the atmosphere and team following the club's first home victory of the season

Jan Vertonghen spoke infectiously after Tottenham's 2-1 win over QPR as he gave his assessment of the Premier League and his new surroundings.

The 25-year-old Belgian made the summer switch from Ajax to White Hart Lane and has immediately become a crowd favourite in the five games he has played.

NEW KING IN TOWN?
COMMENT: Vertonghen has the class to be the new King of White Hart Lane
Speaking to reporters after the win over the Rs, Vertonghen enthused: “I love it [the Premier League]. There is a great ambiance.

“I love it here, the atmosphere is amazing, some of the best players in the world and an amazing team.

“But it is a shame we have to struggle every game until the last minute. I think at the end of the year I'll need a good vacation!”

With his help, Tottenham came from behind against the Rs to take all three points and hand Andre Villas-Boas his first win at White Hart Lane and Vertonghen gave an honest assessment of the jeers that greeted the team at half-time.

“They [the fans] were not too happy in the first half, we want to dominate and play our own game at home and we struggled at that,” he added.

“I'm very happy with the second-half. I think we did very well, a good tactical decision from the manager.

“It's frustrating when you cannot play your own game so I can understand the supporters. We want to dominate at home and even in away games so things are expected of us.”

Spurs are now five games unbeaten and sit just two points off third in the Premier League but face a tricky game at Manchester United next weekend – a familiar venue for Vertonghen.

He said: “I played at Old Trafford last year with Ajax, it was an amazing atmosphere. I think we'll be strong enough to do some things there.

“I hope we can play our best game from the start but of course you need to adapt. A lot of players are injured – five or six – a lot that would be in the starting XI.

“When everybody's back we'll be one of the best teams in the league.”

Firstly, Tottenham and Vertonghen head to Carlisle on Wednesday night in the League Cup third round.
