The trophy is presented to the best player in the Dutch league for the previous season and is an incentive set up by De Telegraaf, Holland's biggest newspaper, and television station Eredivisie Live.
Vertonghen was awarded the trophy at a special gala event following impressive displays for former club Ajax. Such performances led to him being linked with a host of European sides, before eventually sealing his move to Tottenham and the defender was quick to pay tribute to his family upon being presented with the prestigious award.

"But I never had an idol so I will receive it from my mother. She's always been there for me, in my career and in a personal way.
"My mother gives me this award on behalf of my family; my brother and my father. I want to thank my family, my girlfriend, Frank de Boer, the people at Ajax and the parents of my girlfriend."
Dutch legend De Boer took to Twitter to congratulate Vertonghen, stating on his official account: "That's why football is so beautiful. Jan Vertonghen is a top guy. Good luck in London."
Vertonghen was the clear winner and was followed by Jordy Clasie of Feyenoord who took the Silver Boot and Christian Eriksen, who was awarded the Bronze Boot.
AZ Alkmaar's Adam Maher was presented with the Johan Cruyff award for Talent of the Year.
