The Serbian defender praises the Dutchman for his fighting qualities and pays tribute to manager Sir Alex Ferguson after his 1000th league game in charge of the Red Devils

Manchester United defender Nemanja Vidic has been impressed by new signing Robin van Persie's start to life at Old Trafford.

The Dutch striker moved to the Red Devils in a £24 million summer deal from Arsenal and has produced a blistering start to his United career, netting four times in only two starts.

The latest goals came as he rescued his new club from what looked set to be a shock defeat against Southampton on Sunday, hauling them to a 3-2 victory, scoring all three of his side's goals despite missing a penalty in the process.

"He has scored three, he had a great game and he helped us through this difficult game," the Serbian defender told the Daily Mirror of Van Persie.

"He is a fighter. He is not scared to play a hard game as well. This is important if you want be a top goalscorer [at United].

"I think obviously, when you are a good player it is easier to adapt, but I think as well that his desire to score goals plays a big part. When you have a forward who is always looking to score a goal and is hungry to get goals, he is going to get a goal."

The diversity of Van Persie's hat-trick against the Saints represented just how lethal the striker can be from a whole range of positions and Vidic highlighted one key aspect of his play.

"Robin has good movement which is most important," the centre-back observed.

"He is always trying quickly to turn to the goal so that he can have the advantage. He is good at that and obviously I think he has shown us where he is feeding - in the box. He is top class."

Sunday was also a landmark 1000th league game in charge of United for Sir Alex Ferguson and Vidic was quick to pay tribute to his manager's ability to tailor his approach to each individual player.

"He really is a person who knows how to deal with people. This is a very important thing - how to deal with the players and what to expect from individuals," he enthused.

"I think he has the approach for every player. You cannot be the same with every player and he knows the way to get the best out of the players.

"He is an inspiration for us. When you look at his 25 years [in charge of the club] you see that every year he has that desire, that hunger to win the games. That positive energy he has, he has sent it to us. He has set up that mentality in the dressing room.

"You are never happy with the draw. You are always going to the end and you never stop. You have a belief and a desire. That is the desire he is sending to the players."
