Manchester City hope to kick-off a big-money deadline day recruitment drive with the signing of Benfica midfielder Javi Garcia.
The reigning Premier League champions are locked in talks with Benfica as they attempt to force through a £20 million move for the highly-rated 25-year-old, though the Portuguese giants are believed to want £24m for his services.
City's move for the Spaniard comes following the sale of Nigel de Jong to Milan and their recent failure to land top target Daniele De Rossi from Roma.

A deal for Garcia would represent the most significant deal of the summer for City, with manager Roberto Mancini barely concealing his frustration with the club’s lack of transfer activity.
Jack Rodwell signed from Everton for £15m but Mancini wants a top class central midfielder and they believe Garcia, who has been capped once by Spain, fits the bill.
Mancini expects a busy final day of the summer transfer window as the Premier League champions look to tie up deals for Inter right-back Maicon, Swansea winger Scott Sinclair and Fiorentina defender Matija Nastasic.
City expect to pay around £5.5m to sign Maicon and will match his £100,000-a-week salary as Mancini looks to bolster his defence and provide competition for Micah Richards and Pablo Zabaleta.
They are also in the final stages of agreeing a £14m deal to sign Nastasic that includes Stefan Savic moving to the Serie A club. The 19-year-old Serbian has been tagged the ‘next Nemanja Vidic’ and caught the eye last season in 27 appearances for Fiorentina after arriving from Partizan.
Sinclair was in Manchester on Thursday and Friday to complete a switch to the Etihad Stadium after the clubs agreed a fee worth an initial £6.2m, rising to £8m including add-ons.
By City’s standards, it would still represent a fairly modest transfer window, certainly in terms of transfer spending, after they failed to land De Rossi, Robin van Persie, Eden Hazard and Javi Martinez.
