Aston Villa rival Everton for £5m Liverpool midfielder Charlie Adam

The 26-year-old has no future at Anfield and favours a move to Goodison Park, but wants a £2m pay-off to leave the club and will not take a cut on his £60,000-a-week wages

Aston Villa will look to beat off competition from Everton and Fulham by making a move for Liverpool midfielder Charlie Adam this week, has learned.

Liverpool are ready to listen to offers for Adam, who they value at around £5 million, but his departure could be held up as the 26-year-old wants a £2m pay-off to leave Anfield and will not take a cut on his £60,000 weekly salary.

Villa manager Paul Lambert believes that Adam would bring some much-needed creativity to his side’s midfield and is preparing a bid in the next few days ahead of the transfer deadline on Friday.

Everton are long-term admirers of Adam and have also expressed an interest in taking him from their Merseyside rivals, with the former Blackpool man represented by the brother of Everton boss David Moyes.

Adam is understood to be keen on a switch to Everton as he does not feature in Brendan Rodgers’ plans at Anfield and accepts he has no future at the club.

Fulham are also keeping tabs on the Scotland international and could push to sign him this week if either Clint Dempsey or Moussa Dembele are sold.

But all three clubs would have to stretch their finances to match the £60,000-a-week salary Adam earns at Liverpool, while his demand for a £2m loyalty payment from Liverpool could block his departure.

Adam cost Liverpool £8m when he signed from Blackpool last year but the club are already willing to accept a loss on the playmaker, who made 35 appearances under Kenny Dalglish last term.

Adam realises he has fallen down the Anfield pecking order following the arrivals of Joe Allen from Swansea City and Nuri Sahin on a season-long loan from Real Madrid.

Rodgers has been told he needs to raise funds and free up squad space as he seeks to sign new players, with a wide forward like Chelsea star Daniel Sturridge his top priority.

Jay Spearing is set to join Bolton in a £3m deal, while the Reds expect offers for Andy Carroll and Joe Cole as the transfer window draws to a close.
