Sunderland are in talks to sign Jermaine Jenas from Tottenham, Goal.com has learned.

Martin O’Neill kick-started his summer recruitment drive with the signings of Adam Johnson and Steven Fletcher – from Manchester City and Wolves respectively - last week and has now turned his attention to prising Jenas from White Hart Lane.

The former England midfielder has been looking for a new club after being told he does not feature in the plans of new Spurs manager Andre Villas-Boas.

QPR and West Ham both made moves for the 29-year-old earlier in the summer but have now cooled their interest.

It is now increasingly likely that Jenas will move to Wearside before the transfer window closes on Friday, although it has not yet been decided if it will be a permanent move or a season-long loan.

The 29-year-old spent last season with Aston Villa but suffered a series of injury problems and returned to London after rupturing his Achilles last December.

Jenas still has two years to run on his Spurs contract after the club exercised their option to extend it by another 12 months in March.

O’Neill is keen to add Jenas’ experience and proven quality to his ranks and has also targeted the midfielder’s club colleague Danny Rose on loan.

Rose can play at either left-back or in midfield and his possible arrival could pave the way for the departure of Kieran Richardson, who is being eyed by Fulham and West Ham.
