Villas-Boas targets Adebayor return

The Portuguese boss confirms that talks are ongoing with the Togolese striker and is determined to bolster his attacking ranks before the end of the transfer window
Andre Villas-Boas has confirmed that talks are ongoing between Emmanuel Adebayor and Tottenham, as he attempts to bolster his forward line.

The Togolese striker enjoyed a successful loan spell at White Hart Lane last season, notching 17 goals in all competitions and the 34-year-old stated that signing strikers was his main priority.

Villas-Boas told reporters: "There are talks. They have been happening for quite some time.

"We have touched on different players in that position, but we have not been able to conclude a deal.

"Our focus and attention is towards that position, which we will try to sort out next week."

Jermain Defoe is currently the only senior striker on Spurs' books and, after his goalscoring contribution to England on Wednesday night against Italy, the Portuguese is happy to put his faith in the former West Ham striker.

"Competition is something that he is used to. The goal he scored yesterday shows he can make the difference," Villas-Boas added.

"He is tremendous. It was a great goal, he has great technical ability."

The former Chelsea manager is currently preparing his team for their Premier League opener with Newcastle on Saturday and Villas-Boas is happy with his options after losing several players to mid-week international fixtures.

He stated: "We are assessing the players as they return, but there are no major things.

"Gomes is out, Parker is out. Those are the setbacks at the moment. The rest of the squad is available and jumping towards selection."
